The word "curriculum" as it is defined from its early Latin origins means literally "to run a course”. Curriculum documents arrange the content for teaching whilst providing the foundational elements required by teachers to affect learning (Krause 2006) The curriculum can be exemplified through many different means such as; A set of subjects, content, a program of studies, a set of materials, a set of performance objectives, a course of study, everything that is planned by school personnel and most important that which an individual learner experiences as a result of school. This updated syllabus replaces the 5-6 PDHPE Syllabus and Support Document, Formal Consultation Draft, 1992. It also incorporates elements of the Physical Activity for Health and Fitness Support Document, which was distributed in 1997. (PDHPE Syllabus reference) PDHPE is one of the six key learning areas in the NSW primary curriculum.Do i need this here or should it be somewhere else? In critiquing this document it is important that we first establish the main aim of this syllabus. The syllabus’ aim is to develop in each student the knowledge and understanding, skills and values and attitudes needed to lead healthy, active, fulfilling lives. Staying true to this, the syllabus will form the basis for students to adopt a responsible and productive role in society. The document also aims to make a unique contribution to the total school curriculum as it is directly concerned with supporting the development of the student as a whole person. It is my belief that this syllabus focuses specifically on the child as a learner. This is evidently found in the introduction of the document which clarifies that, “the syllabus is based on a broad notion of health that encompasses all aspects on an individual’s well being, inclusive of social, mental, physical and spiritual health. It is concerned with developing in students the knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes that will enable them to lead healthy and fulfilling lives”. In saying that this document
