Women in the Indian society has been considered as the inferior to a man from ancient times. Because of this inferiority, they face many problems in their life. They have to do a lot of struggle to prove themselves equivalent to men.
A woman is seen in the society with more intense and ridiculous sight, it becomes at a higher level risk of honour killing if she is involved in the love marriage or inter-caste love marriage. Women face a lot of challenges because of the patriarchal society, childbearing and take care of family, deep-rooted cultural norms, etc. in the Indian society. The women do not get the equal rights to do anything outside the home, social freedom, etc. than men. Some of the problems faced by the women are because of their domestic responsibilities, cultural and social specified roles, etc.
Harassment at the workplace:
The women are thought to be very easy because they go to work and mingle with men, and there start the harassments. Sexual harassment at workplace is a very serious problem that needs to be dealt with an Iron fist and thankfully the Indian law allows a woman to raise the voice against the wrong things and sexual harassments happened at the workplace.
Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. it is commonly understood as behaviour intended to disturb or upset, and it is characteristically repetitive. In the legal sense, it is intentional behaviour which is very threatening. Sexual harassment refers to persistent and unwanted sexual advances, typically at the workplace, where the consequences of refusing are potentially very disadvantageous to the victims Sexual Harassment.
It is illegal to harass any person because of that person’s sex. Harassment can include “sexual harassment” or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favours and other verbal or physical harassment of sexual nature. Harassment does not have to be a sexual in nature, however, it can include the offensive remarks about person’s sex.
For example, it is illegal to harass a woman by making offensive comments about women in general. Both victim and the harasser can be either a woman or a man, and the victim and harasser can be the same sex.
Reasons for sexual harassment: The reasons for sexual harassment of women at the workplace are many. Few are discussed below.
- Patriarchal Structure: The main reason behind all types of harassment against women lies in the society’s patriarchal structure whereby men always think that he is superior to the woman in every aspect of life. This complex behaviour discriminates the women, thus men employ does not want a female to be a co-employee to work with him equally or he would not like her to be at the higher post in the office; and they harass them to make her feel inferior and uncomfortable. In order to harass her, different kinds of techniques are used by the male employees.
- Sexual perversion: Besides this, sexual perversion of mind among certain individuals is also one of the major reasons of sexual harassment of women at the workplace. Today more and more female candidates are being recruited by public and private sectors, such men have got the easy access to indulge in sexually perverted behaviours.
- Jealousy at the workplace: People having the feeling of Jealousy by others, the male employee would not like to see his female colleague to get promotions or incentives. And they would harass her through sexually perverted behaviour.
- Feeling of Contempt and Disrespect: The men always think that women are considered only as an object to fulfil his sexual desires. We might respect the women at home but other women in the society are not treated as such. People claim to worship and respect women but in reality, many crimes committed against women shows that our claim in nothing but a falsity.
Thus, only the time will tell whether the recently passed Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 would be effective in checking and prohibiting this specific crime whose victims are ‘working women’ only.

Unwelcome sexual behavior has been a serious problem in our society for many years. We need to focus more on this problem, because a lot of men still don’t take it seriously, it happens, because they don’t know the real definition of sexual harassment.
Men and women explain in differently. When 1200 men and women were asked if they would consider sexual proposition flattering 68% of men said they would, and only 17% of the women agreed. At the same time 63% of women would be insulted by it and only 15% of men.

Is a solution to this mess to limit a definition of sexual harassment? Is sexual harassment really a problem in the business or is it just a product of hype and hysteria?
