The concept behind ReMarkable is one of function and practicality for students and teachers.  The objective behind this unique marking app for teachers was to see if there was any way to help benefit the environment by minimizing the amount of paper students use in today's classrooms.  Today the majority of students have easy access to iPads and laptop computers I knew there had to be a seamless way for documents to get submitted to teachers for marking without using printer ink and paper.  Not only did it have to be easy for students to submit, but marking the actual document itself had to be simple and practical for teachers.

I knew this was going to be a challenge, but I was up for it!  The end result is a smart and efficient application I like to call "ReMarkable".  The annotation functionality is very intuitive and was designed with the teachers needs in mind, focussing on what they need when marking students' documents.  All aspects of ReMarkable were carefully reviewed by a panel of teachers/professors to ensure that I was able to achieve a level of excellence with this new marking application.

The portability of ReMarkable gives teachers/professors the convenience of accepting and marking papers anytime, anywhere.  No longer do teachers have to carry home bags full of assignments and papers to mark, all they need now is their iPad and a comfy chair.  Simply receive any document emailed to the app via your unique ReMarkable email address, edit and mark the document in the app and then upon completion simply tap the mail button and the document is emailed back to the student fully marked with your comments.

It's actually just 4 easy steps that make ReMarkable so easy to use!

  • Step 1: Students complete their assignments and instead of printing them, they email them directly to ReMarkable.   (Each user of ReMarkable is given a unique email address once they sign up for free in the application. is the unique email address that is registered to each user, and is ultimately used by students for the submission of documents)
  • Step 2: Teachers receive the documents submitted by the students directly into their ReMarkable profile, and ready to be graded.
  • Step 3: Teachers now mark all assignments in ReMarkable adding notes and annotations onto the actual document.
  • Step 4:  Once the teachers are done marking, they simply click the send back option and the marked paper is emailed back to the student.

ReMarkable has been designed to manage any security concerns that teachers or students may have when submitting their material.  I have taken many security precautions to ensure that everything is backed up, and teachers also have the ability to access 3rd party cloud storage options like Dropbox, Google Drive and Box directly in ReMarkable to move, copy or upload their students work. 

ReMarkable can accept all files types from .doc, .xls, .jpg, .ppt, .pdf, .txt, .csv and .png etc.  Users are not limited to any file types when it comes to documents and images.  Once these files are submitted to ReMarkable they are automatically converted to .PDF, making it easy for teachers to annotate and mark them.  Once the marking is completed, they are then flattened again so that the teachers markings are stamped on the .PDF and ready to be emailed back to the students.

Teachers have many options when marking the assignments from highlighting, strikethrough, bolding, free hand marking, adding text, sticky notes and stamps of approval through custom shapes (checkmarks, arrows etc.).  All of those features can be edited from their colour, size, thickness and overall look.  The possibilities are endless when it comes to the ReMarkable editing tools!

ReMarkable features a customizable folder system, giving users full control and organization over all submitted files.  I understand how difficult it can be to organize multiple classrooms and subjects, which is why I have made this easy as 1-2-3 with our folder system.  Users can now create, add or delete an infinite number of classroom folders that will allow them to group the submitted assignments for easy tracking.

I'm asking for your help to kickstart this project because I've realized that a lot of the marking functionality that I require is being sold by a 3rd party company.  The PDF kit plugin that I require is not something that I can develop on my own, and is the last piece I need to see this dream become a reality.

ReMarkable is going to be a constant work in progress, because after reaching the goal of launching in the app store I will continue to improve development and add new functionality along with unavoidable bug fixes:)  So with the help of Kickstarter I can move past this hump and watch ReMarkable come to life.

Risks and challenges

Developing native iPad applications is always a challenging feat to achieve, and ReMarkable is no different. There are a lot of various moving pieces in this application that I'm developing, and it just so happens that one of the biggest pieces that I require can't be built by myself. Editing PDF's is something that I have to purchase, and the risk of not being able to attain this piece will ultimately dictate the outcome and future success of ReMarkable. I have been working on this passion project for over 6 months, and hope that the world of Kickstarter can assist me to move forward and succeed.

Once I reach my goal, the editing functionality will become a reality and installed into the ReMarkable platform. This will bring ReMarkable just months away from the final launch into the Apple app store, and hopefully on the desk of teachers and schools all over the world!
